Fascia is a sort of gooey, watery connective tissue that wraps and encompasses all the muscles of our body. We want it to be like Taffy and pliable, not restrictive and stuck. A tennis ball will be perfect to help us for this myofascial release as it will act as a sort of 'gentle force' that is applied back to the body. You want the tennis ball to be rather squishy, so see if you can find one lying around that is somewhat used and beat up.
There are mechanical receptors paired with all this fascia that helps to provide feedback all over the body that helps to bring awareness to that specific region. That is why you sometimes feel more tightness in certain areas as opposed to others. The tennis ball will help to massage out these areas of tension. It is also crucial to really focus on breathing while massaging! Massaging alone may not be enough to really relieve the tension. All healing starts from within! So why not focus on correct and full breaths to help make space in the body?
Be sure to not use something that is rigid! The softer the item, the easier the fascia can 'melt' around it! Namaste!
