Understand that a backbend is not about going backwards and letting the ribs pop forwards. It is about lifting the head of the arm bone and the ribs, leaning back into the scapula, keeping activity in the glutes. It requires core strength to not sink into the capsule of the shoulder. The arms should be lit up with a strong connection into the back through the scapula. Hold it together - this is where the core is essential. An open heart can happen from that structure and strength. Feel the connection, drawing everything to center even as we expand - spreading the tissue without popping the front ribs.
